Middle east public transportation authority: A multi-scale demand forecasting model combining macroscopic and microscopic dimensions

Overview

The city of Doha needed to update its traffic model, enabling multi-scale simulations to optimise the planning of its transportation systems.

Background

The need emerged for an advanced tool to model vehicle flows across the metropolitan area of Doha, capable of leveraging real-time data from the extensive network of sensors installed throughout the road system. This solution provides up-to-date information on traffic conditions in real time, supporting the city’s control center in making proactive, data-driven decisions.

Challenge

Develop a traffic simulation model, at both macro and microscopic scale, that integrates historical data with real-time data provided by numerous urban sensors, using specialist software such as PTV Visum and PTV Optima.

Approach

The project followed a structured workflow that began with the collection, validation, and preparation of real-time data from various monitoring systems required for modelling. The macro- and microsimulation models were then developed using PTV Visum and PTV Optima. Finally, the results were consolidated and shared with stakeholders to support strategic decision-making.

Results

Results Achieved

A methodological approach was defined to integrate real-time data with advanced simulation models developed using innovative software. This combination enabled the creation of a tool capable of supporting strategic analysis and decision-making.
